I was sound asleep in my bed when I heard it, a loud scratching sound like a tree was falling on our house. I immediately called my son. He hadn’t heard a thing! I’m sure he thought I was imagining things again. But he put on his coat and grabbed his trusty flashlight and went out. It was a windy, stormy night, and rain was falling so hard that neither man or beast wanted to be out in it. Anyhow he thought he would wait until it got light before examining what the sound was.
In the morning he walked out to the side of the house and was immediately frightened enough that he called 911! A man from the city came first. He asked who else was living in the house, and told my son to get me at least to the southeast portion of the house. He said the tree could fall at any moment and take out my bedroom and craft room with it! He called the fire department and an arbor man. Soon we had quite a company of people standing around the tree, wondering what to do. All of them said they were amazed that the tree didn’t all fall. “What’s holding it up?”, they asked.
One of the firemen climbed to the top of a 200 foot fir tree and handed down a metal rope of some kind. Together, the man at the top and the men at the bottom managed to change the direction of the tree and it fell harmlessly into the woods! Our house wasn’t damaged and I didn’t die that night when I heard the noise. It had to be God, don’t you think?
We do live with the woods just to the north of our border line. It offers those beautiful 200 foot northern fir trees. This tree was not on our property and we can’t find the owner, so I guess we are out the nearly $600 it cost! we still are the gainers though, don’t you agree?
